Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt your shoulders drop and your jaw unclench? Or maybe you caught a whiff of something that instantly woke you up better than a double shot of espresso?
That isn't magic. It is scentscaping.
We believe fragrance is the quickest way to change your state of mind. But you don't have to settle for just burning the same stick of incense every single day. By understanding how different scents affect your mood and learning how to mix them, you can turn your home into a sanctuary, an office, or a romantic getaway with the strike of a match.
Here is how we approach setting the vibe at our house.
Different scents trigger different chemical responses in the brain, so what you burn should depend on what you need right now.
If you are looking to sleep or relax, reach for the classics like Lavender, Chamomile, or Vanilla. There is a reason these are popular. They work. Vanilla, in particular, adds a layer of warmth that makes a space feel safe and enclosed. This is perfect for the bedroom about 30 minutes before you want to be asleep.
On the flip side, if you need energy and focus, maybe for a home office or a Sunday morning cleanup, go for sharp, acidic scents like Citrus (Lemon/Orange), Peppermint, or Eucalyptus. These cut through "brain fog" and wake you up without the jitters of caffeine.
For those quieter moments of meditation or grounding, we love the earthier, resin-based scents like Patchouli, Dragon’s Blood, or Nag Champa. They are complex and deep. These are perfect for a quiet corner or even the garage when you just need to disconnect from the noise of the day.
Why burn one stick when you can create a custom blend? Mixing scents is the best way to make your home smell unique, and it is easier than you think.
If you are using incense, simply light two different sticks and place them in opposite ends of the room. If you are using oils, just add drops of each to your warmer dish.
Here are a few of our personal favorite mixes you should try:
The "Sunday Nap": Mix Lavender and Vanilla. It is like wrapping yourself in a warm, fresh blanket. The vanilla sweetens the herbal edge of the lavender perfectly.
The "Creative Spark": Combine Orange and Clove (or Cinnamon). It is bright and spicy. This wakes up your brain for work or creative projects.
"Desert Rain": A blend of Sage and Sandalwood. This one is earthy and clean. It smells just like the outdoors after a storm.
We know many of you (ourselves included!) have furry friends running around. While we love a good smelling home, safety comes first. Be careful with high concentrations of essential oils like Tea Tree or Peppermint around cats because they can be sensitive to them. Always make sure you are burning in a well-ventilated area where your pet can leave the room if they want to.
You don't need a degree in chemistry to find your signature scent. You just need a nose and a willingness to experiment.
